March 26, 2017 Two shifts at the Outdoor Adventure Show (BMO Centre) introducing our club to hundreds of show patrons. Projected a definitely un-grumpy image of being a member of the astronomy club.
March 17, 2017 What the Hell did Alberta do to deserve both Prime Minister Trudeau and the Provincial NDP Premier Notley? Trudeau is trying to bankrupt Canada, and Notley - well "In her four short years in office, the Premier will have more than tripled the province's debt; it is projected to be $71-billion by the time the next election rolls around in 2019 (from $19.9-billion when her government took office). It goes without saying it is the highest amount of debt the province has ever known. - The Globe and Mail, march 17, 2107. I think every sane person in Alberta is very grumpy about this. The NDP should be planning their Party's funeral.
March 16-17, 2017 Kevin O'Leary said the Alberta Tory (Conservative party) leadership race vote is rigged - and the party discovers 1,351 bogus memberships tracked back to just a couple of IP addresses and membership fees handled with pre-paid (untraceable) credit cards. The Party removed the memberships. WTF!!! In order to get their candidate elected leader some asshats are dishonouring the PC party?? I hope criminal charges are applied when they're caught.
March 17, 2017 Dinner with Cathy and the Calgary grandkids. We have great kids and grandkids. Best kids and grandkids ever. Nobody has better kids and grandkids than us. Never grumpy when with my kids and grandkids.
March 15, 2017 I bet nobody has ever taken a Selfie like this.
(My reflection in the special solar filter on the UofC's 14 inch telescope at the RAO.)
March 13-16, 2017 Tried to do some astrophotography at the RAO. Clouded out 4 nights in a row. We have the worst weather this year. Terrible weather. Nobody has worse weather than us. Makes me grumpy.
March 9, 2017 Updated our home router's firmware after reading about all the security problems with home appliances.
Feb 27 - March 3, 2017 Vacation in Las Vegas. Saw the Mob Museum (great!), the Nuclear Testing Museum (great!), The Australian Bee Gees (great!) and David Coperfield's magic show (incredible!). Had a wonderful tour of Red Rock Canyon and area. Had to fold myself in half to sit in Air Canada Rogue's unbelievable cramped seats to get there and back - made me grumpy for a while.
February 27, 2017 Why I had that quick trip to Tucson: my chance to evaluate a revolutionary new telescope optical design.
February 25, 2017 Pretty pictures I created of the Saturn and Jupiter systems.
February 25, 2017 When an irresistible force meets an immovable object - it just goes around it. Problem solved.
February 23, 2017 Saw this photo entitled "My Electrician must have OCD" on the internet.
How could the guy have left those two outlets I circled like that. Very Messy. Sad.
February 22, 2017 Saw this photo of a lovely "Caesar Salad" on the internet.
Someone out there is grumpier than I am.
February 20, 2017 The BBC (yes THE BBC) requested permission to use one of my computer-generated images on "Black Holes in the Milky Way Galaxy" from for an upcoming event of theirs. Of course I agreed.
February 17, 2017 Took my camera to the WCO for after the tour by cub-scouts tonight, hoping to get shots of two comets. Totally clouded out. Sad.
February 16, 2017 A busy RASC General Meeting night with several speakers. (I take a bunch of A/V equipment to the GM's and run the presentations.)
February 9-12, 2017 Quick trip to Tucson.
February 6, 2017 Added The Grumpy Old Astronomer's Very Lengthy list of Laws, Famous Quotations
and "Top 10" Lists to my Articles.
February 6, 2017 Added a couple of Articles on green lasers and recipes.
February 1, 2017 So PM Trudeau announced (National Post here and here), "In a ministerial mandate letter, that they won't change how Canadians vote - despite a black-and-white election promise and months of studies and consultations." The reality is, that after a silly, confusing, and useless nation-wide on-line survey and tons of government and committee meetings, Trudeau realized that he wasn't going to get the exact voting system he wanted - one that would guarantee the Liberals would stay in power despite what Canadians wanted as a government - without being forced to hold a national (voting) referendum. So he canned the whole deal. Now, if he would only can his budgets that promised a couple of years of $10 billion deficits that turned into 40 years of deficits as high as $30 billion - totalling a $Trillion dollar debt.
January 28, 2017 Added a new Article about my Favourite Optical Illusions.
January 28, 2017 If you have spent years "surfing the net" like I have, you should probably visit this item and get yourself a certificate from the Grumpy Old Astronomer.
January 23, 2017 Prime Minister Trudeau admitted today that he "misspoke" when he said he was going to "phase out" the Oil Sands. "I said something the way I shouldn't have said it", He added, however, that "over the long term, the world is going to have to wean itself off oil in order to combat climate change." So... Did we suddenly enter an Alternate Universe where things are going our way, or was it because they read my Articles on Global Warming and Alternative Energy? Nah - It couldn't have been that. :-)
January 23, 2017 The Globe and Mail reported today that US President Donald Trump "invited TransCanada to reapply to build the Keystone XL pipeline and directed the U.S. Department of State to make a favourable decision on the application within 60 days, but is seeking a "better deal" from the company - likely extracting payments from TransCanada Corp. to the U.S. Treasury in exchange for approval - and that he wants the pipes themselves to be manufactured in the United States." Finally some good news for Alberta's economy.
January 23, 2017 Finished moving stuff from my old Shaw website to this one. My old Shaw website is now just a bunch of redirection notices.
January 23, 2017 Added another couple of articles to my Articles section called "Three Questions You Need to Ask When Buying a New Vehicle" and "How the Internet of Things devices are eroding your privacy on a massive scale." .
January 18, 2017 Added another article to my Articles section called "What Happens When the Sun Don't Shine or the Winds Don't Blow?".

January 14, 2017 SpaceX successfully launched its Falcon rocket, recovered the first stage on its drone ship for re-use, and deployed 10 Iridium NEXT satellites to orbit while travelling 27,120 km/h at a height of 622 km just an hour after launch from California. All on live video. No one was grumpy.
January 14, 2017

Posting this old item just to piss off the "Grammar Trolls".
Read it quickly.
January 13, 2017 So Today, that idiot Trudeau accidently spilled the beans that he intends to "phase out" Alberta's economy, namely the Oil Sands. Intentionally bankrupting not only Canadians with his immense debt policy, but now bankrupting an entire province is despicable. And the reason? The fing Liberals once lost an election to a Western Canadian based party and now they and their power-base seem intent on crippling our economy and then changing the election rules so that it can never happen again. All Albertans are grumpy about this.
January 13, 2017 Shattered a glass today while unloading the dishwasher. Oh well, if that's the worst thing that happens on Friday the Thirteenth, then it's OK. No wait - we still have those liberals in Ottawa and the NDP in Alberta. Bad luck for years from those inept politicians.
January 7, 2017 Saw the movie PASSENGERS with Pat this evening. It was so good I totally forgot how to grumpy.
January 7, 2017 FAA gives SpaceX approval to launch on Feb 9. The 10-satellite-delivery rocket will take off from the SpaceX launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 10:22 a.m. PST (1:22 p.m. EST)
January 6-7, 2017 Request to add Prince George, BC to my DarkSky, Messier Planner, and Night Planner web apps (which had just been moved to the Calgary Centre site). I did that, and ensured all cities where RASC centres exist are represented (now 1030 cities in the list). And, of course I found a number of other things in the original data that needed cleaning up like "?" characters in names.
January 6, 2017 Shaw tech arrived today to tell me that the Shaw DCT I thought was dead was in fact dead. And the DCT I tought was dying because of pixelated images on some channels?? - He quickly fixed the problem by re-doing the distribution cable connectors and tightening all the others on the distribution amp. He definitely gets the "Good Guy Greg" award today!
January 6, 2017 Pat went to a movie today - a musical - I did not.
January 6, 2017 Heard on the news that Trudeau's so-called "economic plan" will increase the Canadian debt buy so many times what he stupidly estimated during the election, that it will take a generation or more to pay off. He's rich, and we're getting bankrupted and that MAKES ME GRUMPY! AND - the carbon tax c.r.a.p. the Alberta NDP (Novice Dumb Politicians) put in is now in place taking money from the rich (i.e. anyone with any money) and giving it to the poor through rebates. So justifying this wealth distribution system by calling it a "carbon tax" REALLY MAKES ME GRUMPY!!! And let me comment on these idiots putting all these provincial and federal taxes in, and totally overspending during a major recession - - - - -
no I'd better not - the words I'd choose would not be very nice AT ALL!!!
January 5, 2017 The GrumpyOldAstronomer site is working. Continuing to load files and such, and creating new content. Not public yet.
January 4-5, 2017 Transferring content from my old Shaw "members" website to the new site and redesigning the site completely.
January 4, 2017 20:45 Holy Cow! 3 minutes later the website had been created and was ready to load. Way To Go Rebel!
January 4, 2017 20:42 Logged into (where "astronomycalgary" is registered), and filled out the forms to have them create domains for and including having them host the new website. Then made payment.
January 4, 2017 07:18 MST The Earth reached Perihelion - the point in its orbit closest to the Sun.
Didn't feel a thing! Still damn cold outside!
January 3-4, 2017 I decided to move the four main astronomical web applications that I wrote years back (Darksky, Messier Planner, Night Planner, and Astroclocks) from my personal web site to a new permanent home on the Calgary RASC website. That way, if anything happened to me or my new site, they would not be lost forever to the people all over the world that use them. Spent a day moving files, changing all links on the RASC site to the new location, and loading redirect pages to the old website to let people know the apps had a new home. It went smoothly and by the next day more than 50 people had visited the applications on their new home.
January 3, 2017 Not to be out done, the idiotic "Nibiru Believers" jump on the bandwagon and say that our weather and earthquakes are being caused by its approach and "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!".
It doesn't take much brainpower to know:
a) Nibiru DOESN'T EXIST, and
b) that if a planet was close enough to affect our atmosphere and cause earthquakes - it would be gigantically freakin' visible to the naked eye!!!
Unfortunately these c.r.a.p. articles show up in my Google News under "Science" - and that makes me Grumpy!
January 3, 2017 The media "discovers" that we know there are two small dim comets visible (only by binoculars or telescopes) during early January. The asshat media outlets (see my Blog intro) immediately jump on the "web hits" wagon proclaiming that they are going to hit us and "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!". There are idiotic "fake news" websites, and then there are professed "real news" websites - that make this c.r.a.p. up. Idiots! What a way to start the year!
January 2, 2017 SpaceX announces that it has determined the cause of the unfortunate rocket-killing explosion on the launch pad last September and schedules their next launch for January 8 (pending FAA approval of the investigation results).
December 31, 2016 23:59:59 A leap second was added to all the Earth's atomic clocks to ensure that "atomic time" closely matches "astronomical time". Had to change all the clocks in the house by a second.
December 31, 2016 announces the availability of a FREE download of a 221 page pdf book called 101 Astronomical Events in 2017 by David A. Dickinson. Grab it, go outside away from your video games and FacePlant and see as many as you can!
Dec 10, 2016 - Jan 2, 2017 Christmas and New Years.
December 8-9, 2016 Discussed with the family what I should call my new website (i.e. it's domain name). After no discussions at all they unanimously picked "The Grumpy Old Astronomer". They said it was easy to remember - I can't imagine why!
December 07, 2016 13:15 Got an e-mail notice from Shaw that they were discontinuing all Shaw "" websites as of March 6, 2017 and we would all have to move "elsewhere". They were nice enough to give 3 months notice and create a downloadable zip of the files (of course I had them locally) but I was still Grumpy that I was gonna have to do a lot of webmaster administration to get through this.
